Taiwan bans shark finning
Taiwan, which has the fourth largest shark-fishing industry in the world, has passed a new law to ban shark-finning. The practice of cutting off the fins and throwing the bodies back into the sea has been blamed for the 80 per cent drop in shark populations. The ban, which is due to take effect next year, has been welcomed by conservationists but they say it does not go far enough. Al Jazeera's Tarek Bazley reports.

Taiwan president Ma Ying-jeou accused of spying on opposition
www.nma.tv Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou has been accused by the opposition Democratic Progressive Party of using Taiwan's intelligence apparatus to spy on DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen. Next Magazine broke the story after interviewing multiple unnamed government sources and obtaining internal Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau documents. The two intelligence agencies accused deny reporting on Tsai to Ma. They say it is common practice to monitor candidates' activities to ensure their safety. These denials are not convincing. In Taiwan politicians sue over the slightest provocation. But neither Tsai nor Next Magazine is being sued. This suggests that either President Ma was aware of the operation — which involved 28 Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau officials and was orchestrated by National Security Council Secretary General Hu Wei-chen — or that the president was unaware of the operation, thus indicating a serious lapse in the chain of command or even gross incompetence on Ma's part, as Hu reports directly to Ma.
